Background: In increasing colorectal cancer mortality in Korea, it is important that the screening of polyps and colon cancer with sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy to decrease mortality. We studied the distribution of polyps underwent a polypectomy with colonoscopy by residents in Haenam hospital in Jeollanamdo to utilize the clinical purpose.
Methods: Data analyzed in this report are based on 607 polyps found in 260 patients on which our residents performed polypectomies among all 502 cases they detected between July 1st, 2013 and May 30th, 2014.
Results: In general, more polyps were evidenced in patients more than 50 years¡¯ compared to those in any other age group. It seems, however, gender, age, and clinical symptoms didn¡¯t affect the distributional patterns of polyps in terms of specific areas. Most polyps were observed on the proximal colon. Adenomas were found mainly on the proximal colon, whereas non-adenomas were witnessed mainly on the distal colon.
Conclusion: We recommend colonoscopy to group more than 50 years¡¯ regardless related symptoms. Also given no statistically significant relationships between the patients¡¯ characteristics and the distributional patterns of polyps, colonoscopy that is widely accessible in Korea is highly recommended.
